What holiday is a concern for all dentists? Halloween! It’s just around the corner and we all know what that means - candy!
Oral Care Tips for you this Halloween
Don’t worry. You and your children can still enjoy all of your Halloween treats guilt-free by following a few simple steps.
- Be selective – remember, you don’t have to eat it all!
- Hide the candy – if it’s not in front of you, you won’t remember to eat it!
- Floss and brush immediately after eating the candy – this will prevent tartar buildup on your teeth!
- Book an appointment for a cleaning – our hygienists will remove any excess plaque and polish your teeth!
- Use fluoride to fight against cavities – fluoride treatment can reduce damage caused by tooth decay and it can be found in certain toothpastes or even in fluoridated drinking water!
How can dentalhouse help?
At our dentalhouse locations, we are dedicated to keeping your smile healthy all year round! Some of our services may be particularly beneficial to you or your child during the Halloween season.
For example, visiting the hygienist for a dental cleaning will remove excess plaque from your teeth which will, in turn, prevent cavities and other dental issues that could potentially result from indulging in sweet treats.
In addition, we offer teeth whitening services to our patients with any discolourations or stains on their teeth. This service may be beneficial after all of the Halloween splurging. For those looking for immediate results, we provide in-office teeth whitening. We also offer take-home teeth whitening kits, which will provide a more gradual transformation for our patients looking for a more feasible alternative.
Is there specific candy that’s worse than others?
Take note of the different kinds of candies and their potential impact on your oral health! Some are more harmful than others. For instance, sticky treats like gummy worms tend to stick to the teeth and can linger, causing cavities. One way to prevent this is making sure to chew your candy well and brush and floss as soon as possible after consumption.
Hard candies like lollipops can also cause damage to your teeth without proper care. Be sure to drink lots of water to wash away any lingering sugars. This, along with frequent brushing and flossing, will prevent cavities and other dental problems.
Remember, we aren’t trying to convey the message that “candy is bad”, but rather that, without oral health care and maintenance, consuming candy can lead to cavities and other dental problems.
